Help fades for rest home residents battling big trucks By Emily O’Connell LADY WIGRAM Retirement Home residents trying to stop trucks rolling through their quiet neighbourhood are unlikely to get the support of the city council. Halswell Ward city councillor Anne Galloway has told Western News and residents that a bylaw is not likely to solve the problem. Residents have been lobbying since April when they met with Cr Galloway and Wigram MP Megan Woods asking Anne for a bylaw to Galloway stop trucks being allowed to drive through Lodestar Ave. It is a short cut to work sites in the area and in Selwyn. Their campaign made international headlines recently when Lady Wigram owner John Tooby confronted four residents who had put a sign on the rest home’s fence pleading for truck drivers to use another route. Mr Tooby abused and swore at them and demanded they take the sign down. The tirade was recorded by a Star journalist who

was photographing the residents when Mr Tooby arrived. The city council is due to bring in the city-wide Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2017 by the end of the year which will allow restrictions

to be placed on streets. It will include allowing for the banning of vehicles from being parked on the road if they’re advertised for sale, vehicles from parking on berms, and stopping

heavy vehicles on certain streets. But Cr Galloway doubts whether the bylaw will apply to Lodestar Ave. She says speed is the main issue, not heavy trucks.

YOU HAVE to sympathise with Lady Wigram Retirement Village residents in their bid to stop trucks using Lodestar Ave. They’ve just lost who thought was an ally in city councillor Anne Galloway (see page 1). Our photo is the tip of the iceberg of what is happening there. It shows what people living on Lodestar Ave have to put up with, day in and day out. The trucks are taking a short cut through this residential street and the authorities don’t seem to care. Residents went to Galloway and Wigram MP Megan Woods for help in April. But Galloway says a city-wide bylaw probably won’t work in Lodestar Ave. She’s got to be joking! So it looks like it is time for new Government MP Megan Woods to step up. – Barry Clarke

Denton descendant speaks out By Emily O’Connell STANLEY DENTON’S grandson is taking a stand for Denton Park. The city council wants to use the park for a new $35.7 million pool, library and service centre. Ben Frampton talked to the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board about the park’s history last week. “Based on what I’ve heard so far, I would prefer it to remain as a reserve and sports ground, and the other proposal be done somewhere else,” he said. Mr Frampton said he doesn’t know when his grandfather Stanley Denton bought the land but he knows he was the owner in 1952. He said his grandfather was going to use it for his tannery business but later found a spot which was better suited. Mr Denton’s neighbour, Horrie Wilson, was part of the Paparua County Council, and encourgaed him to gift the land. He then gave the land to the council in 1954 as a recreation reserve for Hornby residents. Later, the council requested to buy a piece of land from Mr

In Brief NEW ROAD NAMED The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board approved a road name in Waterloo Business Park at their meeting last week. The road will be named Synergy Lane. Other suggested names included Strategy Lane and Venture Lane.

until July 30 2039. Following public consultation, Kyle Park was the most preferred option. It was then eiliminated due to the cost of the remediation work. Mr Frampton said the city council’s consultation process was inadequate. He said to make it fair the city council should resurvey with the available options. Community board chairman

Mike Mora said the reserve still has to be reclassified later this year. “It will be publicly notified and people will have the opportunity to appear and make submissions either for or against it,” he said. Mr Mora said the issue will go to the panel, the panel will make a recommendation and then the Minister of Parks and Recreation will sign it off.

WORKING BEE CLEAN-UP Volunteers helped remove creepers from the railway walkway between Brockworth Pl and Riccarton Rd. There is still more work to be done which requires more technical equipment. Once the wall is clear, Riccarton artist Damian Holt is going to paint some more murals. He painted some murals for the walkway four years ago. HALSWELL TRAFFIC ISSUES The Halswell Residents’ Association has requested the HalswellHornby-Riccarton and SpreydonCashmere community boards discuss how to get people from Halswell and Selwyn into central Christchurch. HRA secretary David Hawke wants to make sure plans don’t have a negative impact on the Addington community. Mr Hawke said there isn’t a sole solution. He said widening roads won’t help if buses are full.

I told my nine-year-old granddaughter I had been asked to write an article on something I am passionate about. ‘Just what are you passionate about,’ was her response. I asked her what she thought. She replied ‘us.’ I smiled, yes, she was right.

I am passionate about my family. I want to build positive memories so together we can recall ‘remember when we did that’. I collected my granddaughter from Ilam Primary School one Friday, aware I was to share tea with this family. On discussing our plans, she told me that in her Ilam Passport, full of ideas for the holidays was the suggested activity of having fish ’n’ chips at the beach. What a great idea. We had

a fun evening at Sumner playing in the rock pools. A memory had been created. Memories are built when traditions become part of life. An Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday morning or making pancakes each Saturday for breakfast. Memories are planted through the activities we engage in as part of our communities. In Riccarton we have just had ‘Our Riccarton, Our community lets have fun’ Community Day. It’s now part of the fabric of our community, a tradition where each year families enjoy a day out together experiencing a lot of different activities, food and entertainment. Creating memories do not just happen. Memories need to be planned, intentionally created as part of our lives. I know I have also allowed negative memories to be placed in that museum for my family. A harsh word said in anger or a nasty response a to comment. ‘I’m sorry’ are redeeming words in those situations. The traffic and speed count report found an average of 1943 vehicles per day travelled on the road – which is a high volume for a local road. Data also indicated about 300 vehicles per day travelled at or above 60km/h. But rest home residents are disappointed. “I was hoping the traffic people, who know much more about this than I do, could sort it out but it doesn’t seem that way,” one told Western News. He has asked for anonymity because of the fallout from other residents over the Tooby outburst. He said trucks rumble past as early as 4.30am, waking them up and causing things to shake. The report suggested speed humps might help. But the resident said that would only cause more noise when the trucks went over them. Cr Galloway said the city council wants people to feel safe walking about their neigh-

Wigram MP Megan Woods said she will have to look at the report and speak to Cr Galloway about what they can do. She said it’s a real issue because unlike most residential streets, the residents are generally home during the working day. City council traffic engineer Edwin Tiong will ask police to patrol the area more regularly. Four generations of Villa Maria girls By Emily O’Connell WHEN GABRIELLA Burns puts on her Villa Maria College uniform each morning, she is doing exactly what her greatgrandmother did nearly 100 years ago. Gabriella is a year 12 student at Villa, and has followed in the footsteps of her great-grandmother Joan, her grandmother Mary and her mother Sarah. Four generations of proud Villa women. It was February 1918 when Joan Mullins started at the newly established Villa Maria College. In those days, Villa was considered “out in the country” and many girls boarded at the school, coming from all over the South Island. In Mrs Mullins’ day, Villa was a small school, started by the Sisters of Mercy to educate girls from all walks of life. The school’s grounds centred about the two-storey convent building, which was built by the former land owner in 1899 and named Kia Toa. Mrs Mullins daughter Mary O’Brien was next to head to Villa, starting after World War 2 in 1946, and graduating in 1953. Mrs O’Brien remembers the pride in being labelled one of the “Villa girls” and treasures

Council initiates uni parking review By Julia Evans PARKING restrictions around Canterbury University are set to tighten. On-street parking through Fendalton and Ilam is being audited by the city council. The 1996 city council introduced a comprehensive parking plan named The University Parking Plan, but staff said the demand for parks has increased beyond that. In response the city council has initiated a review and is seeking community feedback. The first leg of the audit would see tighter restrictions on the Fendalton and Ilam streets, Hamilton Ave, Lothian St, Ilam Rd, Tuirau Pl, Swanleigh Pl, Ryeland Ave and Braithwaite St. These areas are are currently P120 between 9am and 5pm from March to November – the city council is proposing this be changed to P120 between 9am and 5pm year round. Residents have expressed concerns about the number of vehicles parking on their streets. The public can give feedback on the proposal through the city council’s website.

Chocolate factory dream a reality By Jono Edwards, WHEN SAVANNA Leigh turned 16 in June she tore the packaging off a chocolate block to find a shimmering golden ticket. She knew exactly what that meant. “Charlie Bucket, I’m going to be him,” the Halswell girl said when she realised her dream of re-creating Charlie and the Chocolate Factory through a tour of Cadbury World in Dunedin. Savanna, who has Down’s syndrome, said she watched both film versions of the Roald Dahl classic “lots and lots.’’ She travelled to Dunedin for the tour with her parents, two siblings, uncle and grandmother. The night before visiting the factory, she stuck the ticket above her bed in anticipation. “I’m so excited, I just can’t believe it,’’ she said before entering the building. The chocolate waterfall from the films was something she was especially keen to see. Mother Sue Leigh said she had thought about taking Savanna to the factory for some time. “She always talks about it. I

guess the closing of the factory gave us that push.’’ Savanna’s parents then slipped the ticket in a block of chocolate for her to find.

Her fascination with that world began when she was about eight-years-old, Mrs Leigh said. “Every day she must have music around her. She loves to sing. I think she loves the idea of walking into a factory and being able to explore things.’’ Savanna “loved it’’ and, as the family left the tour, she asked

when she could come back, Mrs Leigh said. Mrs Leigh said when Savanna returned to Riccarton High School after her trip, she was showing off to everyone. The family wanted to thank the staff, who gave the family a private tour and a free lunch. – Otago Daily Times

China trip a treat for Kirkwood pupils FIVE Kirkwood intermediate School pupils are returning from China tomorrow. The pupils flew to Chengdu last Friday as part of a cultural trip with their school. They spent a few days with their home-stays, attending their sister school, China Chengdu Bilingual Experimental School, and learning local arts including brush writing, stitch work and making traditional dumplings. Pupils Kendall and Grace said they were looking forward to visiting a panda park and performing kapa haka to 2000 students. They also spent four days in Shanghai, where they went up the Shanghai tower. “This trip is really going to open up the world for us and we look forward to sharing lots of photos and amazing memories

Principal Phil Tappenden said the trip is a great way to help pupils develop a global perspective. “This trip will expose the pupils to different worldviews, and ways of thinking and looking at things, helping us become more outward looking and accepting of other cultures,” he said. The pupils received funding from Education New Zealand for the trip. Only 10 schools across New Zealand received this assistance, with Kirkwood Intermediate being the only school in the South Island.

News Roar of vintage bikes on the beach By Sophie Cornish THE SOUND of vintage motorcycles revving will boom around New Brighton beach on Saturday. New Brighton was one of only of a handful of beaches in New Zealand used for organised racing during the early 1900s. But on Saturday they won’t be racing – the bikes will travel along the beach in a parade. Manufacturers would send their motorcycles to Christchurch to be raced and trialled on the beach. The youngest bike in the show will be a 1939 350cc Triumph. The fifth annual Smash Palace Bike Show will focus on the late Geoff Hockley, a former bike enthusiast and author. Mr Hockley was a New

Brighton identity and a founding member of the Pioneer Motorcycle Club. In the 1960s, Mr Hockley wrote A Tribute to A Gentleman about the history of the club. The event will be linked to the book and Mr Hockley’s son Tony will attend the event. Tony, 82, will be the judge of the ‘Gentleman’s Tribute’ on the day, an award for who he believes is the standout bike and rider on the day. “I’ve known for a wee while it’s been coming up and I think it’s a wonderful idea because it’s the sort of thing my dad would have always been involved in. I’ve always lived in Brighton and I think it’s a really good thing for the area,” he said. Event organiser Anna May said previous motorcycle shows in

New Brighton have been a success. However, this is the first year the bikes will ride on the beach. “It’s sort of rekindled New Brighton’s love for motorbikes and the history,” said Ms May. Twenty bikes will be paraded on the day, two at a time. The races will begin in front of the New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club and continue for 400m around the legs of the pier and back toward the surf club. Ms May wants the focus to be on the demonstration, not racing. “These bikes are not exceptionally fast, but they will be spectacular.” “Its not going to be a big fast drag racing thing, we are very careful to point out this isn’t a race, it’s a demonstration . . . we are demonstrating the way it use to be,” said Ms May.

Doggone good performance at champs By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LONG HOURS of training two dogs to leap, weave and race through challenging obstacle courses has paid off for Jess Tansey. The Rangi Ruru Girls’ School student walked away as one of the most successful dog handlers at the Black Hawk New Zealand Dog Agility Championships. The national competition was held in Kihikihi, Waikato. More than 600 dogs engaged in about 6000 individual runs. Jess’ siberian husky-border collie cross Rapid was named medium dog of the show after winning four runs, a second place, third and fifth in the novice section of the competition. Rapid was not Jess’ only dog to have its day, with her threeyear-old german shepherd border collie cross Swag finishing with three thirds, a fourth and a seventh in the top class category. The competition required handlers to guide their dogs through varied obstacle courses in the fastest time possible, without making mistakes. The obstacles included tunnels, ramps and jumpers. Jess said it was the best

results she and her dogs had achieved. The 17-year-old has been working with dogs for as long she could remember, first starting out running her parent’s dogs around courses before she

properly learnt to train dogs when she was about eight. She has been based Selwyn Dog Training Club for two years and has trained eight dogs so far. She said the training takes a lot of patience and it all comes down

to working out what motivates a dog. Jess said her two dogs’ personalities are the complete opposites. Swag is sweet, cuddly and more trustworthy on the obstacle

course where as Rapid is fast, crazy and more unpredictable. “I have to get my mum voice out,” she said. She has found the most difficult trick to teach her dogs were weaving poles. As well as taking on national competitions, Jess spends her time helping train beginner classes. “Without us there would be no sport really because we have got to get the younger generation in on it because that will be who is in sport in a couple of years time,” she said. As for the rest of the year, Jess will compete in two more upcoming in Hawkes Bay and Christchurch where she will judge for the first time.

Burnside awards top performers By Andrew King PROMISING GOLFER Amelia Garvey won the Principal’s Cup for outstanding achievement at the Burnside High School sports awards. The talented 17-year-old golfer collected one of six awards handed out at the Aurora Centre. Amelia (right) won the Canterbury secondary schools stroke play title, and finished second at the nationals with the school’s mixed golf team. She qualified for the LGPA New Zealand Women’s Open earlier this month and made the cut to play the full four rounds. In March, she won the New Zealand women’s amateur stroke play championship recording a winning score of 15 under par which saw her finish six shots clear. She also won the South Island women’s stroke play championships in February. Amelia was recently named New Zealand Eagles Golfing Society golfer of the year. Other winners of the title over the years includes Stuart Jones, Bob Charles, Danny Lee, Tim Wilkinson and Lydia Ko. She is also a member of the Canterbury women’s golf team.

Five other Burnside High School sports awards were handed out on the night: •Tsubasa Nisbet, 17, won sportswoman of the year after a standout year with both the Burnside basketball and volleyball teams. As well as playing in the senior volleyball team, she coached a junior girls team this year. She has also been the girls basketball most valuable player for the last four years and is the senior captain. She was a member of the Canterbury Wildcats, Canterbury under-19s and the New Zealand under-18 women’s team which came second at the FIBA Oceania Championships. •Alexander Zhou, 17, won sportsman of the year and is captain of the Burnside boys table tennis team. The boys team won the Canterbury

Both teams also brought home titles in their first year at the national schools tournament.

The boys won the Canterbury secondary schools title after beating the girls team. •Girls team members Avon Liu, 17, and Jiayi Zhou, 17, won national secondary schools individual titles. Avon took out the under-19 title and Jiayi won the under-15 title. •Burnside netballer Ketana Armstrong, 17, won the contribution to sports award. In term one she co-ordinated and organised junior indoor netball. During terms two and three she was involved in netball as a senior player, an umpire and was a coach. Ketana was also the sole venue controller for the Wednesday netball competition held at Burnside High.

St Andrew’s dominate Zonta awards By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S College athletes cleaned up at the Zonta Sports Awards last week. Previous winner and former world under-23 cross-country mountain bike champion Anton Cooper spoke at the awards which were initially created to recognise the high achievements of young sportswomen in Canterbury, but later became a combined women’s and men’s event. St Andrew’s had winners in five of the six award categories. Lawrence Arundell took out the boys award for his involvement in the school’s trap shooting team. Christina Shepherd won the award for outstanding achievement by a female athlete with a disability for her efforts in athletics this year. Rower Ben Taylor won the award for outstanding achievement by a sportsman in one sport. Taylor, who lives in West Melton, and teammate Thomas Russel, brought home a silver medal at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Bulgaria with the New Zealand junior men’s coxless quad. Both were selected after a strong showing at the Maadi Cup regatta earlier in the year. St Andrew’s rowing eight
